Memory and storage device
What is Memory
Memory is the part of a computer that stores data, instructions, and information for processing.
There are two main types of memory:
1. RAM (Random Access Memory)
RAM is temporary (volatile) memory.
It stores data and programs that are currently being used by the computer.
When the computer is turned off, all data in RAM is lost.
Examples: Opening a document, browsing the internet, or running an application.
2. ROM (Read Only Memory)
ROM is permanent (non-volatile) memory.
It stores important instructions needed to start the computer (booting).
The data in ROM is not lost when the computer is turned off.
Example:BIOS/UEFI Chip – It stores the startup instructions of a computer.
Difference Between RAM and ROM
RAM
Full Form: Random Access Memory
Temporary memory
Data is lost when power is off
Faster
Used while programs are running
ROM
Full Form: Read Only Memory
Permanent memory
Data is not lost when power is off
Slower than RAM
Stores startup (boot) instructions
Storage Devices
A storage device is a hardware device used to store data, files, programs, and information permanently or for a long time.
Types of Storage Devices
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – Stores large amounts of data permanently.
Solid State Drive (SSD) – Faster than an HDD and stores data permanently.
USB Flash Drive (Pen Drive) – Portable device used to store and transfer files.
Memory Card (SD Card/MicroSD Card) – Used in mobile phones, cameras, and other devices.
CD (Compact Disc) – Optical storage device used for storing music, videos, and data.
DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) – Stores more data than a CD.
Blu-ray Disc – Optical disc with much higher storage capacity than a DVD.
Magnetic Tape – Used mainly for backup and archiving large amounts of data.
External Hard Drive – Portable hard disk used for backups and extra storage.
Cloud Storage – Stores data on the internet.
Examples of Cloud Storage:
- Google Drive
- Microsoft OneDrive
- Dropbox
