Generations of Computer
GENERATION OF COMPUTER
A computer generation refers to the stage of development of computers based on the technology used.
1. First Generation (1946–1959)
Technology: Vacuum Tubes
Features:
- Very large in size
- High power consumption
- Generated a lot of heat
- Slow processing speed
Examples: ENIAC, UNIVAC I
2. Second Generation (1959–1965)
Technology: Transistors
Features:
- Smaller and faster than first-generation computers
- Consumed less power
- More reliable
Examples: IBM 1401, IBM 7094
3. Third Generation (1965–1971)
Technology: Integrated Circuits (ICs)
Features:
- Smaller, faster, and more reliable
- Less heat generation
- Supported operating systems
Examples: IBM System/360, PDP-8
4. Fourth Generation (1971–Present)
Technology: Microprocessors
Features:
- Very small size
- High speed
- Low cost
- Personal computers (PCs) became common
Examples: IBM PC, Apple Macintosh
5. Fifth Generation (Present & Future)
Technology: Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Features:
- AI and Machine Learning
- Natural Language Processing
- Robotics and Expert Systems
- Very high processing speed
Examples: AI-based computers, robots, and smart systems
